Border Control Measures of Japan

Travel restrictions is further eased from June 1, 2022.

Business travelers from most countries are not required on-arrival COVID-19 test and can enter Japan without quarantine.

All foreign nationals are required to have VISA to enter Japan. RX Japan support our exhibitors to obtain VISA to attend our exhibitions.

Japanese Border Measures starting from 2022/6/1-

【Quarantine】

※【3 days at home】Another test will be administered on the 3rd day. Isolation requirements will be lifted if your results are negative for this test. If you do not take the test, you will be required quarantine for a total of 5 days.

*1 Effective from Sep. 7, pre-departure test will not be required for those who have valid vaccination certificate.

■ Pre-departure test must be within 72 hours from the date of sample collection to the flight departure time.

■ Grouping of the countries/regions designated and announced by the MOFA and MHLW based on the New Border Measures (28) updated on Sep. 7, 2022 is as follows:

Group Blue

Regardless of the vaccination status of the entrants/returnees, on-arrival test, home quarantine and other measures are not required.

Group Yellow

On-arrival test and 5-day home quarantine (or 3-day home quarantine + negative result of a voluntary test) are required, however, those who obtain a valid vaccination certificate are not required to have on-arrival test, home quarantine and other measures.

Group Red

On-arrival test is required. 3-day quarantine at a government-designated facility is required, however, those who obtain a valid vaccination certificate may have 5-day home quarantine (or 3-day home quarantine + negative result of a voluntary test) instead.

【Valid Vaccination Certificate】

1. The certificate must be issued by a government or public institution
2. The following items must be indicated in Japanese or English:

Name, date of birth, vaccine name/manufacturer, date of vaccination, number of doses administered

3. The certificate must clearly indicate that you have received two doses from among the following vaccines (vaccine name/manufacturer):

・ Comirnaty/Pfizer
・ Vaxzevria/AstraZeneca
・ COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna/Moderna
・ Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine/Janssen
・ COVAXIN/Bharat
・ Nuvaxovid/Novavax 

※ For the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine/Janssen, one dose is considered equivalent to two doses.
※ Doses will also be considered valid even if both are not the same vaccine.
※ Regarding the application of measures based on Japan's Enhanced Border Measure (27), Comirnaty (manufactured by Fosun Pharma/BioNTech) , as well as Covishield and COVOVAX (manufactured by the Serum Institute of India), will be treated as identical to Comirnaty/Pfizer, Vaxzevria/AstraZeneca and Nuvaxovid/Novavax, respectively.

4. The certificate must clearly indicate that you have received at a third dose, with it being one of the following vaccines (vaccine name/manufacturer):

・ Comirnaty/Pfizer
・ COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna/Moderna
・ Nuvaxovid/Novavax 
・ Vaxzevria/AstraZeneca (effective from June 26th, 2022)
・ JACOVDEN/Janssen (effective from June 26th, 2022)

※ Regarding the application of measures based on Japan's Enhanced Border Measure (28), Comirnaty (manufactured by Fosun Pharma/BioNTech), as well as Covishield and COVOVAX (manufactured by the Serum Institute of India) will be treated as identical to Comirnaty/Pfizer, Vaxzevria/AstraZeneca and Nuvaxovid/Novavax, respectively.
※ Vaccines not listed in "(3) First and Second Dose" don’t count as the first or second dose.

What you need to do to enter Japan

◆1. Before Departure

a. Obtain visa

   - All foreign nationals need to obtain visa to enter Japan

   - For visa application, you need a sponsoring company in Japan.  RX Japan will be the one for our exhibitors.  

b. Obtain COVID-19 negative test result certificate

   - All entrants must provide a certificate of inspection within 72 hours prior to departure.

c. Answer questionnaire

   - Fill in the questionnaire from the Web (https://arqs-qa.followup.mhlw.go.jp/) and save the issued QR code.

   - It is recommended that you answer the questionnaire on the day of the entry to Japan

d. Read through the pledge and fill it in

Only if you travel from countries/regions of Group Red and don't have valid vaccination certificate

   - You need to submit the written pledge to the airport quarantine office when entering Japan

Fast Track

You can complete some quarantine procedures before you enter Japan and can save your time at the airport.  

Fast Track is available for those entering from:

Narita International Airport

Haneda Airport

 Chubu Centrair International Airport

 Kansai International Airport

Fukuoka Airport

◆2. At Immigration in Japan

a. Submit 3 required documents

   - You need to submit these three documents below

  • COVID-19 negative test result certificate (1)(b)
  • QR code from questionnaire (1)(c)
  • Written pledge (1)(d)  (Only if you travel from countries/regions of Group Red and don't have valid vaccination certificate) 

b. Take a PCR test

You don't need to take a PCR test at arrival if you travel from countries/regions of Group Blue .  Those who from countries/regions of Group Yellow with valid vaccination certificate also don't need to take a PCR test at arrival. 

   - You will be tested for Covid-19 at the airport

c. Download MySOS (application) to your mobile/tablet device

   - The application will be used when reporting your health condition, etc. to the authority including negative COVID-19 test result to shorten your quarantine.

◆3. After Arrival

a. Quarantine

Only for those who travel from countries/regions of Group Red and those from countries/regions of Group Yellow without valid vaccination certificate. 

   - You must stay at your quarantine location until a designated period of quarantine in completed

*You may use the public transportation for self-isolation at your own place for 24 hours after entry into Japan.
